The procedure:

The operation involves tightening loosened and sagging subcutaneous tissues, such as the platysma muscle of the neck and its fascia—known as the SMAS. In mini-lift procedures (S-lift or MACS lift), this is achieved by “gathering” the subcutaneous fascia (SMAS) using several strategically placed sutures. This is followed by firm tightening of the skin with removal of excess skin. The procedure can be successfully combined with liposuction of the submental (under-chin) area.

Depending on the extent, the surgery lasts approximately 2–4 hours. Drains are inserted during the procedure and are removed the following day. Due to the less radical nature of the operation, it is usually performed after premedication under local anesthesia, and patients are typically able to leave the facility on the day of surgery after a short recovery period, accompanied by a close person.

Postoperative period:

A firm dressing is required for only 5 days. After its removal, patients may wash their hair. At this stage, patients are usually able to resume certain work and social activities. We further recommend supporting the facial tissues at home by wearing an elastic compression garment or a vertically worn headband (under the chin and over the crown of the head). With mini-lift procedures, swelling typically lasts about 3–5 days. Cold compresses and certain medications help reduce swelling. Sutures are removed between the 9th and 14th day.

In a mini-lift (MACS lift), facial tissues are lifted upward, whereas in a full facelift they are lifted upward and backward behind the ear.

Additional differences compared to a facelift:

  • The incision is made at the hairline in front of the ear and follows the front edge of the auricle toward the earlobe, roughly in the shape of the number 7. Behind the ear, only a short incision is made.
  • The area of tissue mobilization is smaller than in a facelift, resulting in better skin blood supply and faster, improved healing (including in smokers).
  • Subcutaneous tissues are lifted upward with sutures, and the procedure has a greater effect on nasolabial folds than a classic facelift.
  • Facelifts are predominantly performed under general anesthesia, whereas mini-lifts can be performed completely painlessly under local anesthesia alone.
  • Mini-lifts are associated with less swelling and a lower risk of bruising.
