The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and, in the case of augmentation of both lips, takes approximately 90 minutes. The principle of the procedure involves implantation of so-called dermis (the deepest layer of the skin with the epithelium removed), which is harvested from one or both infragluteal folds. This autologous material, which is not absorbed by the body, is implanted into a tunnel beneath the vermilion of the lips. The result is not only an increase in lip volume but also an optical enhancement of the red portion of the lips.
Hospitalization lasts 24 hours, and the period of surgical recovery is approximately 14–16 days. Full physical activity is possible 4 weeks after surgery.
Lip augmentation can also be performed using a non-invasive method—application of hyaluronic acid fillers. This procedure is relatively quick and, apart from temporary swelling at the injection site, does not restrict patients in their everyday activities. The treatment is performed directly at the plastic surgery outpatient clinic.
